BEHIND Antarctica and Greenland, southern Patagonia is the third largest ice field in the world. In Chile much of this area is protected in Parque Nacional Bernardo O'Higgins and the top of Parque Nacional Torres del Paine. The smaller eastern side of the ice field is protected under Glaciers National Park.
This journey starts from our base in El Calafate heading into the mountains to the spectacular Perito Moreno Glacier for a daytrip. From El Calafate we head around Lago Argentina to the hidden mountain village of El Chalten. From there I take a spectacular day hike along the Laguna de los Tres track to spectacular views of Mount Fitzroy. Escaping a severe storm, we head out into the savannah lands stopping the night in a historical canyon before returning to the mountains and crossing them into Chile to go horse riding on a local farm under the dramatic Cerro Castillo. We wind our way through the mountains eventually reaching a Pacific Ocean fiord from where we explore the elusively mysterious Hanging Glacier. |
