Primordial coast

STARTING my first substantial trek in four years, it had been a long journey into the West Coast, then northwards to the remote town of Karamea  and a little beyond to the start of the Heaphy Track, the longest of New Zealand’s great walks.

The “Wet Coast” lived up to its name today with heavy rain producing spectacular rapids below the swingbridges plunging into the Antarctic sea under tropical looking Nikau Palm forests.

Although I had been here before over twenty years ago, I knew this was going to be a pretty amazing adventure. Previous times I had done the track in 3-4 days. This time I had seven days, and had a lot more time for exploring this time.

Today though, I needed to quickly head up the coast from where I was here at Katipo Creek Shelter half way along the track to the first hut at the mouth of the Heaphy River.
