IT WAS my first time flying across Australia, going from Brisbane to Perth via Melbourne. I had initially booked a direct trip but severe storm activity in Brisbane had caused last night's flight to be cancelled requiring me to fly early this morning. To date this was by far the longest flight I had ever taken, the longest before this had been across the Tasman Sea between Australia and New Zealand.

Flying from Melbourne took me across the Great Southern Bight eventually making landfall near Esperance. Here the rugged blue Southern Ocean hammers the coastline and the broken islands that lie offshore.
