EASTER Island is uniquely known for its stone Moai statues. They aren't known anywhere else in the world. It was surprising for me therefore to see one at the western entrance to Wellington Harbour.
The Moai looks out over the harbour entrance where ships come in from Cook Strait, one of the most treacherous passages of water on Earth. Once inside the harbour the water is relatively calm.
The coastline on either side of the harbour is very rugged due to the large fault lines that run through here. A large 8.1 magnitude earthquake in 1855 raised the land at the other side of the harbour on this photo by six metres. This side of the harbour rose about two metres. The ground on which the Moai stands would have been under water just a few centuries ago.
Now the Moai stands here in wait of the next big earthquake to hit the area and raise the land even higher.
