THE WAIKATO River is New Zealand's longest at around 320 kilometres long. It drains out of Lake Taupo heading northward.
Although the river is mostly slow flowing, at Huka Falls is drops several metres over a very hard vein of rock. Although the waterfall is relatively short, the sheer volume of water tumbling over it makes it an impressive spectacle, the thundering roar echoes through the surrounding hills.
