HEADING southwards by train from Sapporo to Hakodate, I made a stop at Shiraoi. Here an Ainu village had been constructed beside this beautiful lake.
The Ainu were Hokkaido's first indigenous people, inhabiting parts of this island, and Sakhalin further north. They thrived in the extremely harsh climate through long winters when snow covered the entire island for months at a time every year.
There are fewer than ten thousand Ainu left, just a tiny proportion of Hokkaido's 3 million people.
