CREATED by volcanic activity, the Shiretoko Five Lakes is a tranquil paradise, at the easternmost point of Hokkaido, perhaps the most remote part of Japan.
Here in summer the shallow lakes almost perfectly reflect the chain of volcanoes where the Kuril Islands of Russia lie beyond. No doubt the lakes would freeze solid in the severe winters experienced here.
