FLYING between Brisbane and Nelson I usually stop in Wellington. Landing in Wellington really is quite something with the short airport runway locked in between mountain ranges exposed to the prevailing winds coming from the south east or north west. South easterlies are particularly rough with the plane windows quickly getting covered in salt spray from waves hammering the end of the runway.

From Wellington there is a short twenty minute flight to Nelson across the Marlborough Sounds. This is an area of long valleys flooded from when sea levels rose 120 metres at the end of the last ice age. The rivers feeding these valleys have not been able to deposit enough sediment to fill these valleys, so only the long mountainous ridges are left poking above the calm waters of Marlborough Sounds.
