A GONDOLA rises steeply above the tourist centre of Queenstown set in a remote corner of the Southern Alps.

Queenstown sits at the edge of Lake Wakitipu, a long glacial lake extending from Fiordland past the town and sweeping past The Remarkables, a spectacular mountain range with deeply cut spurs and gullies forming an amazing backdrop to Queenstown.
