THE STORM had raged over the sea for two days, but it never came onshore. Overnight it had dissipated as I started my return hike to catch the boat at Bulwer.

Here I stopped at a small lagoon in the early morning and looked back. The sun was shining through what was left of the cloud which was giving up the ghost.

The lagoon had been recently formed from a big northerly storm that had washed much of the sand out to sea, then another storm pushed a big bank of sand back onto the beach trapping water in the long hollow that remained. The beaches of islands made from sand are very dynamic.
