THE PITCHER plants were at their annual peak again, towering high into the blue sky.

Their red lips attracted small animals which would climb in their trumpets to find the reservoir of water to drink from. Unfortunately the downward facing barbs inside the trumpets help to ensure the animals never get out again. Enzymes in the water quickly dissolve the animals making food for these hungry pitcher plants in the otherwise nutrient-poor swamp where they grow.
