HEAVY rain fell on my first afternoon on Kinabalu. Thankfully I was sheltered in a village perched on the mountainside. The people who lived there were the guardians of the mountain, assuring me of a fine passage to the summit in a couple of days time. Today though, the mountain remained elusive under a thick blanket of dark cloud. The steep ridge from which the village was perched on ascended into the thick cloud hidden in the sheets of heavy rain that fell. The villagers were very accommodating.
