THE PLAZA De Armas is the heart and soul of Santiago. It is a large cobblestoned square in between the financial and government districts. The site now occupied by the square was in 1541 the training ground for the Spanish occupation of Chile.
A number of tents had been erected on the square. In each tent were two people playing chess. I assumed this was some kind of tournament.
Across the other side of the square was a large covered market in a building that used to be the main railway station. Here I met one of the locals and we ordered some very delicious local seafood..
