THE CHRISTCHURCH CBD is cordoned off. Every street leading into the city centre has been barricaded with wire fencing. Outside each barricade is a tent where army officers occupy 24 hours a day.

Beyond the barricades great piles of rubble litter the streets. The once proud gothic stone buildings now reduced to rubble. The high rise buildings lean over by several degrees. They will have to be pulled down.

The inner city is abandoned until the risk of aftershocks subsides. Until then the people here do the best they can. Businesses have temporarily relocated to the suburbs, residents do what they can to repair their damaged homes and many leave seeking new opportunities elsewhere in New Zealand or overseas.
