IT HAD been surprisingly cold in Nairobi - well I thought so given how close to the equator it is. After following rolling hill country out of the city south westward towards the plains of Masai Mara, I suddenly encountered a very deep and wide valley, standing one and a half kilometres deep.

This was the rift valley, where humanity began millions of years ago. This is a challenging place to live where only the fittest survive. This was the very valley where apes evolved into humans millions of years ago to gain the advantage they needed.

The Rift Valley is the result of Africa splitting in half to form two separate continents. The valley will continue to widen until eventually the sea will flood in separating Eastern Africa from the rest of the continent.
