FLYING between Nelson and Auckland at an altitude of nearly 6000 metres I passed Mount Taranaki, the volcano under which I was born and the tallest mountain in New Zealand I have climbed.
At 2518 metres, it was as high as I have ever climbed before travelling overseas. I have climbed it twice and at those times thought it would be impossible for me to climb to higher altitudes.
I have climbed far higher mountains since travelling though, the highest of which is Mount Kilimanjaro at 5895 metres high, roughly the altitude I was currently flying past and looking down on this relatively tiny mountain that I had once thought was the utter limit of my climbing ability.
