I CLIMBED Mount Ngungun today. As it was a fitness climb I took little notice of my surroundings until reaching the summit. Rain had fallen over the past two evenings causing everything to suddenly spring to life following several months of drought. The summit was swarming with all kinds of insects like I had never seen before. What had attracted them up here?
Following the climb I took a more leisurely stroll along one of the short walks at the lake behind Ewan Maddock Dam. Again there was quite an abundance of insects though not the swarms I had encountered on Mount Ngungun. Along the trail I saw two amazingly coloured Rhyomthemis graphiptera, the graphic flutterer dragonfly. Native to Australia and Papua New Guinea, this dragonfly has uniquely golden wings.
Following the walk by the lake, I found a new trail by the Jowarra section of the Mooloolah River. The river was little more than a few muddy pools deep set in the rainforest, but I saw some real photography potential here for when the rainy season does finally arrive.
