THE STARS were particularly bright over Brisbane tonight, indicating winter is on its way.

The two bright star trails in the lower part of the sky are Alpha and Beta Centauri. Leading these stars higher in the sky are the stars of the Southern Cross.

Alpha Centaurii is actually a triple star, a binary pair of sun-like stars about 4.5 light years away, plus the invisible red dwarf Proxima Centauri at 4.2 light years away. The nearby Beta Centauri is nearly 100 times the distance away and contains two blue giants and a dwarf star.
