YESTERDAY'S heavy rain had made the dense rainforest along the banks of the Heaphy River very swampy. This did not stop me from joining a group to explore the depths of the jungle to discover an elusive cave system.

After quite some time navigating the swampy forest and a scramble up a muddy bank we reached one of several gaping entrances to Field Cave, a huge cavern meandering through limestone karst. A stream echoed through the cavern feeding the long roots of a couple of ancient trees growing in the forest above the dark ceiling.
