LEAVING James Mackay Hut shortly after sunrise the chill overnight air had cooled the drops of condensation on the golden tussock to solid diamonds of ice. A fine steamy mist rose from the fields of tussock as the strong morning sun began to heat them.
Everything in the Mackay Downs has effectively scaled everything down to about an eighth of what you would expect. The trees stunted by the poor granite soils and exposure to the high altitude weather only grew two to four metres high, an eighth of their height in normal conditions. The rolling hills on the downs were rather small as well, giving this whole area the feeling of a giant Japanese bonsai garden.
