THE FIRST day of the Waikaremoana Great Walk consisted of a moderate 600 metre high climb from the edge of the lake up the distinctive Panekire Range.

The southern side of the range was moderately sloping and covered in spectacular goblin forest. The northern side of the range dropped almost vertically into the lake far below. For most of the time the track remained in the forest but would occasionally reach a saddle in the top of the range to provide spectacular views across the lake.

The most dramatic viewpoint was at the top of Bald Knob, where we reached just as a huge southerly front was barrelling in. For a few moments we were rewarded with phenomenal views before the thick cold cloud completely enveloped us, requiring a quick hike to the hut before darkness falls and the weather gets too bad.
