AT THIRTY degrees, it was the warmest July day on record. The city didn't quite hit 30, but at 29.1 it was still very warm for this time of year.

Walking along Southbank in the mid afternoon there were hundreds of people sitting down on either side of the river walk and in the shelter of the bush for as far as the eye could see staring at their phones. The recent "Pokemon" fad had really taken hold with countless people here fixated on their phones waiting for these virtual creatures to appear on their screens.

Wandering up and down the walkway for a while, I didn't see any activity, just people staring at their screens and the odd murmur. Some are saying this fad is good as it is getting people who spend all day at home staring at their phone screens outside, even if it is to spend the time sitting in the shade bowing their heads at their tiny screens. Apparently this inanimate activity drains about one percent of the phone's battery every minute, yet these people seemed to be sitting there for a very long time.

I thought of starting a new fad - finding and photographing the congregations of semi-animate pokemon hunters, but to my surprise there were several other photographers here doing exactly that.
