LEAVING Pyongyang in the early morning, we headed across the rugged granite mountains making up the backbone of the Korean Peninsula. Too rugged to be used as farmland, these mountains have largely been left untouched apart from the very bumpy concrete road winding its way over the high passes above spectacular gorges passing through many tunnels.
We stopped here at the Sinpyong Lagoon, a large hydroelectric scheme, and later at the pristine Ulim waterfall.
It was almost sunset when we were finally rewarded with reaching the remote east coast, a region seldom visited by outsiders. After a visit to a local farming cooperative, we settled at the Mabon Beach Resort near Hamhung where I got my first ever view of the northern night sky, including the Pole Star.
