WITH thunder rumbling from the approaching stormclouds, we left Wonsan in the early morning to take the long bumpy highway over the mountains back towards Pyongyang.

On our way back we stopped at the tomb and temple of King Tongmyon, the sole remains of a Korean dynasty fro long ago. I am standing here outside the mausoleum with the hill marking his tomb to the right and a large Buddhist temple at the bottom of the hill a few hundred metres in front of me.

Upon our return to Pyongyang, we stopped at the Reunification Monument before visiting a foreign language bookstore and heading up the Juche Tower to watch the approaching sunset over the city. This was followed by a very entertaining dinner and a visit to the Kaewon Youth Park before heading back to the Yanggakdo International Hotel towering on its tiny island.
