CATCHING a train in the mid morning towards Ulaanbaatar, I was put into the second carriage with a number of other independent travellers all on their way into Mongolia. I entered the train alone (thankfully navigating my way around the rather complex Beijing Railway Station with surprising ease) but quickly met some of the other travellers in my carriage. I was sharing a cabin with a guy from London who had been teaching English in China for two years, and he was heading home entirely by train, with several stops along the way.

The great thing about independent travellers is that we all have an amazing story to tell - where we've been, where we are going, and where we plan to go in the future.

After passing through the spectacular mountains outside Beijing, and eventually leaving the city haze behind, we eventually reached the start of the Gobi Desert. At this stage it was dinner time, so we navigated our way 12 carriages to the dining car. It was such a long way that we felt like we were back in Beijing when we finally reached it. The long walk was well worthwhile though, with a very nice (and simple) Chinese dinner - our last meal in the great land of China.
