TODAY I returned to Ulaanbaatar with my guides and explored this rapidly growing city with large cranes building new highrises all over the place indicative of the recent mining boom in the country. In amongst all the new buildings were little hidden treasures of temples and old museums showing Mongolia's rich history.
The Mongolians are very big eaters and my guide illustrated this by taking me to a local restaurant to what I thought was a huge feast of lamb and vegetables, along wiht a glass of Vodka. Apparently the Mongolians do vodka better than the Russians - though to me (being a non-drinker) it had a most dreadful taste very much like methylated spirits.
With the enormous lunch completed (actually only half eaten), we completed our tour around the city topping it off with a traditional Mongolian concert, before I caught the train heading north towards Russia.
