HAVING arrived at Sukhe-Bator at the top of Mongolia, our international carriage was disconnected from the rest of the train and left near the border for a couple of hours before Mongolian immigration came on board to clear us out of the country. Once the rather lengthy process was complete, the carriage was shunted across the Russian border into Naushki where we went through the immigration process all over again before our carriage was connected up to a Russian locomotive to head to the end of the Trans-Mongolian track at Ulan-Ude and continue along the Trans-Siberian Route overnight towards Irkutsk.

It was a very long day of little happening with our carriage leaving Naushki 14 hours after arriving into Sukhe-Bator. Lucky I had brought a book to read on the next part of my adventure across Russia, plus two books I had picked up earlier this trip, not to mention the company of other travellers in the carriage.
