THE TRAIN sped along the railway all night and all day with just a few short stops. The only significant stop in the day was in the remote Siberian city of Krasnoyarsk where I am standing outside the train.
I had established by now that I was the only tourist on the train (or at least in 2nd class where most tourists tend to go. Any in the first class carriage would be keeping to themselves as they would do). It seemed strange travelling through one of the remotest parts of Earth through vast forests of silver birch and pine in a rather cramped carriage, but everyone on board were locals, but not much was to be said with me knowing very little Russian and everyone I met knew almost no English.
The scenery was spectacular though, better than I had expected with the leaves of the silver birch trees bright yellow ready to drop off as the trees were starting to rest for the very long winter ahead.
