THE COLD polar stormy weather continued all day, but this didn't stop me from spending all day exploring the city and its canals. Passing numerous architectual wonders I eventually reached the main river where a couple of bridges led to the Peter and Paul Fortress, set on an island. The fortress has mostly been converted to a series of museums but it still retains its original charm.
From the fortress I returned to the city centre where I encountered more very interesting buildings, including the church shown here. Inside it was elaborately decorated with a mosaic of saints all peering down on those who ventured inside.
