ARRIVING into Boryspil airport in the small hours of the morning there was a bit of a delay waiting for immigration to open before getting out. In the process I met a farmer from New Zealand who was entering Ukraine for about the sixth time, but the first time since they introduced visas at the airport, he was in a spot of bother but I got him out of his strife. Ukrainian beauracracy leaves much to be desired.

Upon leaving the airport I took a taxi into the city (great to have an honest taxi driver for once not trying to rip you off), to check into a rather shabby and basic, but with heaps of character right on Independence Square. I quickly found a tour around the city on a double decker bus. This gave me some great ideas of where to explore in a couple of days time when I do a walking tour of the city.

In the evening I explored the square again. The fountains weren't working in the square, but the lights brilliantly illuminated the huge statues erected following Ukraine's declaration of independence and the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. The square has had eight other names stemming from events in history since it was first built in 1869. Following the 2013 Euromaiden protests and the 2014 Ukrainian revolution protests forcing the annual celebrations of independence to be banned now leaving the square in a state of disrepair.
