IN MY final day in the Ukraine I explored some of the old churches and the forested hills running through the city. The trees were at their autumn peak - something I've more or less experienced the whole way across from Ulaanbaatar a couple of weeks ago. The cloud cover thickened and steady rain began to fall.

I sought shelter in the city's metro system, entering the Arsenal Station, famous for being the deepest underground station with the platform 105 metres below the surface (although the Pyongyang metro is at 110 metres below the surface, so I'll need to check that out. I travelled to several stations, some of which had some character (though not comparing to the Russian metro systems), but most were very plain.

I eventually returned to Independence Square where I discovered a globe on top of the names of all of the capital cities in the world (written in cyrillic). I found Canberra and Wellington there, indicating distances of 14,896km and 17,106km respectively. Wellington was the farthest capital city from Kiev. Here I am standing in front of the monument before calling it an early night before the long trip home tomorrow.
