CELEBRATING the lunar new year at Brisbane's Chinatown, there were a range of performances throughout the afternoon. Whilst most performances were Chinese, following the ancient traditions of the first new moon after northern hemisphere winter equinox.

The new year occurs during the middle of winter in the northern hemisphere. Over the years large numbers of people have migrated down-under. Adding to this the large numbers of tourists coming here to escape the bitterly cold northern winters, the lunar new year celebrations are now becoming quite an event here in the larger cities.
