THE MORNING dawned overcast with threatening rain as I left Dumpling Hut following the Arthur River towards Sandfly Point. There were about fifteen minutes of rain in the middle of the morning, but otherwise it held back behind the thick layers of cloud swirling around the towering mountains on either side of the valley.
We stopped for a few minutes at the beautiful Mackay Falls and Bell Rock, the vibrant colours of the pool and forest masked a little by the mist generated by the waterfall.
I eventually reached the end of the track at Sandfly Point, catching the boat a short distance into Milford Sound. I arrived at the Milford Lodge just before the heavy rain started falling. There I relaxed with a bunch of my new friends made along the trail.
