CYCLONE Debbie had caused extensive damage up north. Upon making landfall as a category 4 system it reduced to a tropical low. The storm headed south bringing in heavy rain to its south stretching down much of the length of Australia's east coast.
The storm arrived in Brisbane today, dumping around 200mm rain here, and up to 800mm in the Gold Coast hinterland where the ex-cyclone collided with a large cold front. This will no doubt create major flooding in the rivers behind the Gold Coast and over the border in the Tweed and beyond. The whole of South East Queensland shut down today with all schools closed and businesses shutting down by midday. Rain fell heavily during the day, but eased off in the late afternoon to be replaced with strong northerly winds as the storm's eye approached.
The eye crossed over around 8:00 PM. The wind eased off creating only a small amount of blur in this long exposure image. It was still overcast but visibility had greatly improved. After an hour the wind started blowing strong from the south west quickly clearing away the clouds. The eye continued heading south eastward to the ocean to drift towards New Zealand.
