ON A clear night the nearly half moon showed its spectacular craters, more concentrated towards its southern pole.
The terrain is very rugged around the south pole, with the disk of the moon appearing quite jagged from the large mountains towering on the horizon. In the shadow zone, a particularly high mountain close to the pole is already light, even though the surrounding land is still in darkness awaiting the lunar dawn.
These mountains put a small area around the pole in near-perpetual darkness, allowing an accumulation of polar ice, making the area suitable for settlement should a lunar base be eventually established.
