FOLLOWING the meandering Brisbane River upstream from near the Gateway Bridge to the city centre, I reached New Farm Park where I found the World War II Sandakan memorial. I had visited this memorial some years ago with a few friends. I had always wanted to go to Borneo for its natural history, but seeing this memorial to the Australian soldiers who had perished in the death marches from Sandakan to Ranau was the final piece of inspiration needed for me to book the trip back in 2010. |
