FOLLOWING an early morning walk along the foreshore at Wynnum and Manly, I joined a tour group heading out into the bay to the old prison at St Helena Island.

Once considered a model prison due to its profitable industries more than paying for itself, it was closed down and abandoned 85 years ago. The stone buildings were now crumbling ruins near the top of the volcanic hill.

The tour was very entertaining, providing an excellent history of the island and of Moreton Bay. Once known as one of the Green Isles, the island got its name in 1826 when an Aboriginal prisoner named Napoleon was exiled here for life, but escaped just three days later in a canoe he secretly built.

After the tour I returned to the mainland continuing to follow the coast southwards to a very recently constructed track exploring Lota and Tingapla Creeks.
