STARTING from Rainbow Beach, the Cooloola Great Walk traverses one of the world's largest and oldest areas of sand dunes. This makes this five day hike from here southward to Noosa a very worthy addition to my exploration of the South East Queensland coast.

After crossing the Carlo sandblow, the track entered eucalyptus forest crossing the tops of the dunes high above the beach before turning south to head through the centre of the park, winding its way through 200 metre high hills made of the purest silica sand. Sheltered away from the salt winds of the open ocean, I passed through some spectacular rainforest over several hours as rain began to fall.

Following a lunch break at Poona Lake, I continued through the lush rainforest until a steep climb through dry eucalypt forest took me back to the top of the dunes back into a patch of rainforest at the Kauri campsite where I stayed over the long rainy night.
