IT'S GOOD morning on another sunny day heading up through Patagonia. We're just sort of leaving the Lakes District now heading up towards our final border crossing on this trip going from Argentina back into Chile again. So, these are our last moments in Argentina. Around here we're also crossing the 40-degree latitude. So, we've been through the roaring 40s, the ferocious 50s and before that the 60s back in Antarctica. We've gained quite a lot of latitude. So around here we are crossing the 40th latitude into the 30s. Already things have changed quite a bit. There is a lot more vegetation now but it is still quite dry. I'm sure you'll notice as we go up through the 30s that the rainforests of the 40s and 50s are going to gradually give way to desert as we head towards the subtropics. From here we're going to have a reduction in the prevailing westerly winds and it's going to get a whole lot dryer. So, as we head to Santiago and eventually beyond. So, it will be interesting to see what happens as things continue to change as we continue our journey towards the equator.

Well we've now arrived in Pucon which is at the top end of Patagonia at its northernmost end. We've got this very spectacular volcano here. The name escapes me at the moment. It's actually active and you may just be able to see some steam coming out the top. It's actually erupting at the moment. It's amazing being so close to an active volcano like this and we will be staying here for two full days so I'll be exploring some of the national parks with some of the others in the group, a few walks we will be doing. I'm really looking forward to it, it's such a nice area and it is a whole lot warmer than it has been. I think it's a much lower elevation than we have been at Bariloche, so it's going to be a very good day tomorrow and the next day. I'm going to stay here and photograph the sunset and watch the mountain and see the setting sun rays on the snow. The mountain actually reminds me very much of Mount Taranaki in New Zealand and this is at a very similar latitude. I'm guessing it's at least two kilometres high, probably two and a half (actually 2800 metres) similar in height to Mount Taranaki (actually Mount Ruapehu). I'm now going to watch the sunset and have dinner and have an early start tomorrow with some of the others in the group as we head off to one of the national parks here. Over and out.
