THIS is the first video diary I've done in a long time, the first since I arrived back in Australia. I think my last one was in Auckland Airport four months ago now on my way home from Easter Island, Patagonia and Antarctica.

It's very different here back in Australia. Today I'm on the Sunshine Coast, near the top. I'm aiming for that little trig station up there. That's Emu Mountain, a very small mountain even by Australian standards. It's a good little walk to get started back again. This area forms part of the Noosa Heads National Park. You can see the Noosa Heads in the distance over there and behind it in the far distance is the Cooloola sandmass.

I've heard this is a very nice spot. I've never done it before so I thought I'd come up here and do a bit of exploring. I'm looking at plugging this into one of the days of the South East Queensland hike. One of the days I did from the end of Noosa Heads up there down to Point Arkwright which is just visible there. That was quite a short day, so thought I'd add this in.

I'm going to walk up to the top of the mountain, then down another track into Stumer's Creek which runs along there (you can't see it from here). It is a swampy wetland. Then I'll be walking out to Yaroomba over there where I'll be finishing up. It's a little bit windy, quite cool today. It is only going to get up to 23 degrees today. It's the 1st of September, the beginning of spring. Most days recently have been getting up to around 26 degrees so today is a bit cold which will be good for hiking.

This will eventually get onto the main South East Queensland walk. I have published it and it is fully functional. I'll give you a link to the website here.

I've now made it to the summit of Emu Mountain. There's the trig station right behind me there. There's a couple of magpies. It's nice and relaxing up here, just a short climb. It looks like this rock is volcanic and I'm guessing this is part of the northernmost extent of the Glasshouse Mountains volcanic formation. These mountains are the remains of old volcanic plugs. Where I'm heading is there in the background, and over there is the Sunshine Coast all running along there.

I can just see a couple of humpback whales heading down the coast. They have gone up to Hervey Bay to have their calves for the winter and now heading back to Antarctica. They are a very long way away from here, and certainly not close like I had seen them when exploring the Antarctic Peninsula. One day I'll head out there and have a look at them.

This little scruffy looking bush here - most people wouldn't take much notice of it with the rough little nodules on it. It looks pretty sad. It is a very rare Emu Mountain she oak. They are only found around this area on a thirty kilometre stretch along this part of the Sunshine Coast. This little shrub is named after the mountain and it is quite rare. Fortunately this area is now kept as a national park because there is not much wild land left.

I'm now in the Stumer Creek walkway and I've just crossed the creek here. There's not much water in it as this is the middle of the dry season at the moment with almost no rain in late winter into early spring. It's now starting to warm up even though today is quite cool at 23 degrees. It's very pleasant weather for a walk though. I'm just going along the boardwalk now heading towards the beach. There should be another side track heading off from here which I'll be able to follow along the coast. It's all very swampy here which is why I'm walking on boardwalk.

I've now reached the coast. The beautiful Sunshine Coast out there near Yaroomba Beach and back there is Emu Mountain.

I'm close to the main road now having had a little walk down the beach and now back in the bush heading through the Stumer Creek swamp about to end the hike. It's been a nice short walk to get back into the swing of things (I haven't been hiking for a long time).
