HELLO friends. I'm hiking along a short track through Fern Gully along what would have once been one of the forestry roads going from Halfmoon Bay. This morning I'm hiking along this track, followed by the Ryan's Creek Trail which goes around Paterson Inlet. I aim to finish all that this morning and then this afternoon I will be resting getting ready to do the Rakiura Track.

This is why I keep going back to New Zealand. It's so beautiful here. I've got this camera set up for video and I have a very good microphone for it so I'm hoping to get some really good recordings of different birds and the creeks and the sounds of nature here.

OK I've reached the end of the track now, the Fern Gully Track. From here it's back out along the creek to the junction then out along Ryan's Creek Track to Paterson Inlet. I'm going to sit down here. It's beautiful here so I'll settle here and have second breakfast before heading back down the creek.

Well I'm back at the end of the track now. I've done the Fern Gully Track. Now I'm doing the Ryan's Creek Track. I'm going to be back here in a few days time at the end of the Rakiura Track. There's another track that goes around Paterson Inlet and I'm going to do this one (Ryan's Creek) today because once I get back here (after doing the Rakiura Track) I'm going to want to head straight back out to the village. So whilst I'm still reasonably fit and the conditions are good, I'll do the Ryan's Creek Track.

On the map here I've just done this one (Fern Gully). Now I'm going to do this one around here (Ryan's Creek) back to the village. Tomorrow I'm going to start up here (Lee's Bay on the Rakiura Track) and over the following two days I'll go around and come back here.

OK this first section of the Rakiura Track is pretty easy. This will be a nice end to the track in a few days time. I've now reached the junction here. I've come from Halfmoon Bay fifty minutes walk down that way but it took me a lot longer because I also did the Fern Gully Track. So now I'm going to Half Moon Bay around Ryan's Creek. That's the scenic route which will take two hours, six kilometres. It goes around the inlet so it's the scenic way around. This is the Rakiura Track. North Arm Hut where I'll be staying the last night is about four and a half hours away. It will take about five and a half hours to get back to Halfmoon Bay on the last day but it will take me quite a bit longer because I'm doing video as well and photography. Anyway that's the Rakiura Track up there.

OK I've just reached a little clearing here (Ryan's Creek). It looks like we've just reached the start of the (Ryan's Creek arm of the) Paterson Inlet. Not much to see here but when I get little views I'll show you - it is a pretty big place. This (the table) has got paua shells.
