GOOD morning friends. It is about 7:30 in the morning and I'm about 15 minutes out from Port William Hut. Today I'm heading from the coast of Foveaux Strait over a section of the island to Paterson Inlet. It's a fairly long hike about 13 kilometres and perhaps about 6 hours. I'm retracing a bit of yesterday's track back to the junction, and then up and down over the mountains. Sit back and relax and enjoy some of these highlights I'll show you. Today is sunny. I think it will cloud over but it definitely is not going to rain. It's quite cold but it will warm up as there is no wind. It's going to be a very nice day for hiking across this beautiful island.

I'm about an hour and a quarter out from Port William. I've reached this really interesting site here. A couple of old steam engines used for hauling the logs out of the bush. These started operation around 1900 or so. These ones are still left here. There's another one out there. Originally horses were used to carry all the logs out of the bush but they were eventually replaced with these steam engines which hauled them up to the tracks and allowed them to be taken out. Here's a couple of them still sitting here.

I've now arrived at Paterson Inlet. The water's just out there behind me. North Arm Hut is just up there and I'm all settled in for the night. So for the rest of this afternoon I'm going to explore some of this area and relax. It is absolutely beautiful and pristine here. It's nice and calm here today even though you can see the vegetation is very windswept. We've got some of the mountains over there. Those are some of the more remote reaches of Stewart Island. This is the northern end of Paterson Inlet. There is a big channel of water here. Tomorrow I head down the channel out towards the mouth of the inlet. But in the meantime no more hiking to do today so I'm just going to relax here. Over and out.
