Well hello friends on this wonderful Star Wars day. Today is a public holiday in Queensland and it's the fourth of May, as in "May the Fourth be with you". It is international Star Wars day and it is being celebrated on a public holiday here in Queensland. I'm going to celebrate that by walking up this creek here.

Today I'm coming from near the mouth of Four Mile Creek in the Pine Rivers area. It's really good to be out today as restrictions are starting to ease. I do see in the news that a lot of the national parks are quite crowded at the moment because everyone is suffering from cabin fever. Speaking of cabin fever, this is the first time I have been out of my property in thirty seven days.

Last time I left my house was to go and vote at the local council elections. I remember when I first moved to this general area, this was the Pine Rivers Shire. We all used to call this place "The Shire". Unfortunately in recent years they have amalgamated this council area with two others so it's only known as a region now. It was called Pine Rivers Shire due to the North Pine River and the South Pine River flowing through here with this area in between known as the Pine Rivers. This is Four Mile Creek which flows about half way between the two rivers. A little further downstream it merges into North Pine River. As you can see the tide's in at the moment.

This is as far as I can get downstream - there is a big park here. There are paved walkways following most of the creek upstream. That is what I'm planning to do today. I'm going to go as far upstream as possible and may even find the source. I've never found it before. What I'm going to do is head upstream. It's quite cold at the moment. A couple of days ago we had this very cold Antarctic front come over. There was no cloud - there is a little bit of cloud now but over the past two days there has been no cloud at all. I almost had the fireplace going, it was that cold with dropping down to abuot ten degrees. I think winter has come early this year, but fortunately we are able to get out and about again. Anyway, that's it. I think it's time to go.

This is the start of the track so let's see how far it goes.

This area used to be a military base. This is Spitfire Avenue. It's named because this used to be a runway where military planes used to land. Obviously it's not a military base anymore, in recent decades it's really built up and now it's a street called Spitfire Ave in memory of the runway which was once here. Anyway we're near the end of this diversion. Just come down here and entering the first of many parks going beside the creek, so we won't be seeing any more streets for a while now.

We're just crossing over the creek. It's a whole lot smaller now we are above the tidal area. I'm going to take you through a few more shots as we keep on going.

Well we've reached the main road. This is Gympie Road. Just behind me are some hoop pines. These are what gave the Pine Rivers its name. This area used to be covered in hoop pines. There are not many left but a lot have now been planted along the main road, but otherwise you don't see many now. Now I'm going to go through the subway under the main road and under the railway line.

I've reached the end of the path now. The stream is getting very small but I'm sure there's a bit more and there's another subdivision up here, so I'm going to see if I can get across and keep on going upstream.

OK I've just arrived here at Warner Lakes. There's a pukeko over there. Four Mile Creek starts up here at the mouth of the lake. I think there are a couple of lakes up here so I'll explore them to see where they go and maybe even find the source of the creek. The wind has almost completely died down now which is really nice. Things are starting to warm up nicely and it's now about 24 degrees which is fairly mild. We usually get strong westerlies, usually in late May to early June, but this year they arrived at the beginning of May. It looks like this is going to be a long winter. We get our second lot of westerlies in August to early September. I think it will be a long winter as there is not so much traffic on the roads to pollute the air so I think this is going to be a cool winter. Usually the May westerlies and August westerlies are the coldest time of year (due to wind chill). There may be one or two coldest days around the solstice but otherwise winter is very calm like this. Anyway I'd better keep going and explore the lake.

I've now reached the source of Four Mile Creek. It's taken me two hours fifty two minutes at a nice leisurely pace taking a few photos and some video. There's the (permanent) source there where the lake ends. Crossing this bridge there's a flow channel but it's not permanent.

I'm about fifteen minutes further upstream from the permanent source and the dry channel earlier leads from this very lovely lake. This area is called Warner Lakes which is a fairly new subdivision area. It is quite nice. I've never been up this far before. There is a lot of very nice bird life here. It's taken me the best part of three hours to get from the tidal area near the mouth of the creek up to this source. During the rainy season the lake level rises to make this the source. There are hills over there so there won't be any creeks running into it from there.

This has been a great way to celebrate the Queensland Star Wars holiday, fourth of May. So from me it's over and out, and May the fourth be with you.
