LEAVING work early, I headed up to the Sunshine Coast hinterland eventually reaching Flaxton from where I turned onto Flaxton Mill Road towards one of the northern entrances of Kondalilla National Park. Here the Sunshine Coast Hinterland Great Walk left the footpath following the road to enter the forest. I parked and followed this track through the fall cedar forest along the top of a ridge for a little over a kilometre before reaching the Flaxton Walkers' Camp, the first of three campsites along the great walk. Although the sky was clear, the track was still very wet from the recent rain.

I was the first to arrive at the camping ground so I had first pick of the campsite clearings cut into the thick bracken undergrowth. I selected one camping clearing, but spotted a large carpet snake slowly crossing the track and entering the undergrowth on the other side. It must have only very recently moulted as its leopard spotted skin was very bright.

After watching the snake cross the track I decided to head to one of the larger camping clearings, where I set up the bivvy tent and settled in for the evening as the sun sunk low behind the forest.

A couple showed up shortly before sunset and selected one of the other campsites quickly setting up their tent as the sky began to darken. I settled into my tent as the sky darkened to a moonless night.
