Introduction to today's journey
Today's journey catches a flight from Brisbane to Melbourne. I explore the inner city for the afternoon before taking a train to Geelong from where I catch the ferry to Tasmania.
Today's Journey
Following a morning flight from Brisbane, I explore the Melbourne inner city. |
The Yarra River flows through the middle of the city forming a natural port where the city was initially established in 1835. From here it continues another 240 kilometres upstream to its source. |
Crossing one of the foot bridges, a ferry passes travelling along the once pristine river now quite dirty from the city and upstream agriculture. |
Tall high rises tower over the river's south bank rising to 300 metres. |
From the Yarra River, I head through the city centre towards Southern Cross railway station. |
From Southern Cross Station, I catch a train heading south westward through farmland and new residential estates towards Geelong. |
At the industrial northern end of Geelong, I follow a path towards the coast. |
I reach the Spirit of Tasmania terminal, from where I catch the ferry. |
It is after dark when the ferry departs, heading across the calm waters of Port Phillip Bay towards Bass Strait. |
I spend the night in a cabin heading across the sea towards Tasmania. |
