Introduction to today's journey
Today's journey explores the city of Launceston, firstly heading up Cataract Gorge following the trail above the South Esk River. Upon returning down the river, I explore the town centre before doing final preparations to start tomorrow's trek.
Today's Journey
Walking from the city centre starting at sunrise, I go through several parks passing the Launceston Centopath. |
I reach the River Tamar which is tidal up to here over fifty kilometres inland from the northern coast, creating a peaceful port from where the city was established. |
Crossing King's Bridge I follow the walking trail up the side of Cataract Gorge, passing the old ticket gate and cottage perched on the edge of the ravine. |
Continuing upstream, I pass the wooden shelter built in the 1920s when the track was opened. |
I reach the top of the calm water passing through the ancient volcanic formation. |
Bridge structures straddle the side of the canyon as I continue upstream above the cascading gorge. |
Upon reaching the top of the gorge, the trail goes around the lake at First Basin. |
At the far end of First Basin, Alexandra Suspension Bridge crosses the South Esk River. |
Once around the basin, I follow the gorge back downstream towards the city centre. |
I explore the city centre before doing the final preparations for tomorrow's trek. |
