Introduction to today's journey
Today's journey takes us from Halong City back to Hanoi, staying ahead of the typhoon. We stop at a pottery factory before returning to Hanoi and exploring some of the city. We head to the train station in the early evening to catch the overnight Reunification Express southward.
Today's Journey
Early morning in Halong City as the weather turns for the worse from the approaching Typhoon Parma now expecting to pass to the north of here. |
Heading back to Hanoi, we stop at a porcelane pottery factory where we paint some small pots. |
Heading futher towards Hanoi, school children ride their bikes from school. |
Reaching the very condensed suburbia of Hanoi. |
The buildings are very narrow and tall as until recently were taxed on their width. To minimise the land tax buildings were built at narrow as possible - only 2 - 3 metres wide. |
Exploring the centre of Hanoi's old quarter amongst the sea of motorbikes parked outside the shops. |
Exploring the peaceful inner city park beside Ho Hoan Kiem Lake. |
Following the narrow and busy roads around the lake. |
Shop keepers resting by their outdoor stalls. There is a distinct lack of local government regulations here. Anyone is allowed to set up any shop anywhere. |
Catching the Reunification Express southwards in the late evening. The railway was built and dedicated in 1975 to commemmorate the unification between north and south Vietnam with the north overrunning the south. |
