Introduction to today's journey
Today's journey takes me upstream along the Perfume River to a Buddhist temple before crossing to the other side and riding precariously on the backs of motorbikes through a winding trail to more temples, an old tiger stadium and the residential areas before returning into the city centre where we explore a local market.
Today's Journey
Catching one of several dragonboats to follow the Purfume River upstream. |
There are lots of boats heading up and down the river carrying cargoes to take to the city's markets. |
After following the river several kilometres upstrea, we stop at the north bank to explore the Thien Mu Pagoda, a Buddhist temple built in 1601. |
We cross the river and ride precariously on the back of motorbikes to Long Chau Temple to watch a group of monks chanting in front of one of the large Buddhas. |
A derelict house beside the Ho Quyen Tiger Arena. |
Visiting the Banh ep Chi Hue village market where conical Vietnamese hats are made. |
We continue by motorbike to the top of Doi Vong Canh hill to see this spectacular view looking further upstream along the Perfume River. The river is still recovering from a typhoon two weeks ago. |
Heading back towards the city, we stop at the Mausoleum and grave of the 19th Century Emperor Tu Doc. He was buried in a location which remains hidden to this day. |
Returning into Hue, we stop at a restaurant where many thousands of people have scrawled their names on the wall over the years. I oblige to add mine. |
Mr Lac, the owner, is deaf and mute, but this doesn't stop him from running this successful business. He tells the story of his large family. |
