Introduction to today's journey
Today's journey takes me from Phnom Penh northward stopping at a roadside market to each tarantulas for breakfast before visiting a silf farm and a 1000 year old bridge before arriving in Siem Reap.
Today's Journey
Crossing the Tonle Sap River as we depart Phnom Penh. This is a side channel of the Mekong River connecting it to the Tonle Sap Lake we will be crossing in a couple of days. The water flows upstream early in the rainy season to fill the lake. Now the lake is full, it is starting to drain out. |
Following the bumpy main road towards Siem Reap, we pass several villages. |
We stop at the village of Skun at the junction of three highways. In the middle of the village is a market which sells (amongst other things) edible tarantulas deep fried in oil. I buy a few and have them for breakfast. |
Continuing along the road towards Siem Reap, there are a lot of small market stalls with all sorts of farm produce being sold. |
The road gets rough as we continue through the farmland. |
Many motorbikes carry produce along the busy road. |
We stop at a silk farm run by an American war veteran who decided to stay here after the war. They grow their own silkworms and weave them into garments. |
The houses are small and stand on stilts to keep above the monsoonal flood waters. |
The Spean Praptos Bridge, which has stood here during the 12th century. It is one of the few Khmer era bridges still standing. |
Arriving into Siem Reap where we settle and rest before a big day exploring the temples tomorrow. |
