Introduction to today's journey
Today's journey takes me into Dubai, where I explore both the new and old parts of this ultramodern city. I spend the end of the day at the world's largest shopping mall before heading up the world's tallest building.
Today's Journey
Arriving in Dubai at about 4:00AM, I am through customs and in the city before sunrise. It is a surprisingly muggy morning at 34 degrees. |
I head to the Dubai Marina development which is nearing completion. The apartment towers rise very high in the sky in this ultra modern city. |
From the marina I head towards the old quarter near the Dubai River. A traditional market with its towers designed to cool the buildings provide welcome relief as the temperature passes 40 degrees. |
Visiting Jumeirah Mosque where the Emirate people live. |
View of the modern city from the old quarter, with its spectacular buildings towering into the desert haze. |
Visiting the Dubai Museum showing the traditional relics of the old city just a few decades ago before the new city suddenly appeared. |
Taking a boat across Dubai Creek, we explore some of the impressive Iranian spice markets. |
I head into the city centre near sunset. A lot of new buildings are still going up as the building boom comes to a close. |
The spectacular night display of the fountains outside Dubai Mall, the world's largest shopping mall. The world's tallest building towers on the other side of the fountains. |
View from the viewing platform about half way up the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world. |
